Cosmetic tattooing

What is cosmetic tattooing?

Cosmetic tattooing (or semi-permanent makeup) Is the art & science of implanting pigments into the epidermis – the top layer of skin. This layer of skin is continually replacing itself, meaning your cosmetic tattoo will eventually fade away. This is different to body art tattooing which is implanted deeper into the skin (the dermis) – making it permanent. Semi-permanent work is ideal for your face because this allows us to adjust the shape & colour every few years as you age. Cosmetic tattooing is designed specifically for eyebrows, lips & eyeliner enhancements. The earliest origins date all the way back to 1300 BCE! Ancient cultures (from Asia to Europe) have celebrated tattooing as part of ritual, tradition & beautification for thousands of years. The modern techniques used today produce incredibly soft results that will save you time, boost your confidence & enhance your natural beauty!

Available at our Edgehill location only. Consultations may be booked online, otherwise, if you wish to book in for treatment please contact our friendly team.

Meet Tawny

Hi, my name is Tawny. I was born in Cape Town – South Africa, but I have had the pleasure of growing up in the tropical climate of sunny FNQ. I have been passionate about art ever since I can remember. I was usually the quiet kid in class – mostly only interested in whatever new drawing was consuming my focus. I enjoyed working on my own as I felt that creativity was my outlet, my sacred place where I could express myself without reason or words. As I got older, this appreciation developed into a love for fine art, detail, and beauty in symmetry. This visual world fulfilled me creatively, but I never believed that I could make a sustainable career out of it. After school I also became interested in health & nutrition – so I moved to Sydney to study a bachelor of health science (specialising in naturopathy).

After a year I was, well – bored out of my mind. Whilst it was interesting to learn about the human body, something was missing. And then I took a class on Botany & herbal medicine. Part of this class was drawing. We got to draw plants – every little unique stem, leaf, vein. I was in my element. I went above and beyond (completely discarding the theory half, whoops). I purchased plants from my local botanist and sat for hours upon hours, transferring every little detail onto paper. I found my sacred space again, my meditative world. So that was it, I realised that I had been in the wrong place all along. I left university & moved back home. Thankfully the time I did spend there equipped me with a thorough understanding of skin anatomy, a crucial element when it comes to safe practice in cosmetic tattooing.

So how did I find cosmetic tattooing? If I’m honest I spent many years being a little lost. I worked different hospitality jobs, mostly as a barista. In hindsight this was also great as I developed a steady hand – something that is now invaluable to my work. One day I decided to have my own eyebrows tattooed. And then it just clicked. The peaceful environment, the calming music, the way she focused so intently for hours. I knew. I made a promise to myself to do whatever it took to become an amazing cosmetic tattoo artist. I have since invested in extensive masterclass training, and have had the honour to learn from some of the best artists in the industry. I am committed to continual upskilling, as I believe we never stop learning & growing.

I genuinely feel that I have found my purpose in life. I love what I do, and most importantly I am able to bring value & confidence to other women – something that will never feel like work.

Brow Tattooing

This is a semi-permanent treatment whereby pigments are implanted into the skin to create more symmetry, balance & definition of the brows. The shape, technique, saturation & colour is custom designed to suit the individual. Having great brows will completely transform & frame your face, In fact eyebrow tattooing has even been described as a non-surgical brow lift! Includes a complementary touch up session 4-8 weeks later.

Lip Blush Tattooing

This treatment is for clients desiring more colour in their lips. As we age we naturally lose pigment in this area. Replenishing a soft blush of colour will restore youth in a subtle yet powerful way. The colour is softly dusted over the lips and blended perfectly so that nobody will suspect a thing. Harsh lip liner tattoos are a thing of the past! The key is in the pigment selection, which is customised to match your natural lip colour & skin tones. The results give the illusion of fuller lips without actually making them bigger, lip blush tattooing is the new filler! Combine the two, and you have magic! Includes a complementary touch up session 4-8 weeks later.

Li-FT Saline Tattoo Removal

Li-FT is a safe and effective method of removal for unwanted cosmetic tattoos – including eyebrows, lips, and eyeliner “wings.” It is also effective for small body art tattoos (no larger than a deck of cards). Li-FT works by utilizing a naturally occurring process in the body called osmosis. The Li-FT solution is tattooed into the skin, drawing the unwanted pigment towards the surface where it is then removed during the scabbing process. The average number of recommended sessions for fading or complete removal is 2-5. Results will vary depending on (but not limited to) the client’s skin, lifestyle, health profile, the ability to heal well, the type and color of pigment to be lightened, depth of pigment placement, technique used, the configuration of the needle used, and compliance with the specific LI-FT aftercare instructions. Some tattoo lightening procedures will be more or less successful than others based on these factors, therefore no guarantees can be made as to how many sessions will be required or whether removal can be achieved.

Pre-care : Lips & Brows

Please note: Following pre-care advice is extremely important. Not doing so has the potential to greatly impact your treatment, and could even result in cancellation of your appointment. It is your responsibility to read over this section at least 1 week prior to your treatment to make sure that you are prepared.

Chemical peels, microdermabrasion or facials within 1 month, alcohol within 24 hours, coffee on the morning of your appointment, fish oil within 1 week, Omega 3 or vitamin E supplements within 1 week, antibiotics or painkillers within 1 week, or sunburn within 2 weeks. No botox near the area within 2 weeks, no filler near the area within 4 weeks. Don’t plan any major events during the 2 weeks of healing, brows will be darker than desired with minor flaking/ scabbing. Lips will be much more vibrant than desired, with dryness & minor flaking/ scabbing.
Brows only: No waxing within 3 days of treatment, no tinting within 3 weeks of treatment (we want to see your natural colour), no brow growth serums within 1 month.
Lips only: No laser hair removal within 2 weeks, no waxing within 3 days.

To Do:

Gently exfoliate the area for 3 days prior and ensure that the skin is well nourished. Wash your hair the night before, as you will need to avoid wetting the area for 2 weeks. Come in with an open mind about different techniques, but also come in with pictures if you already have a good idea of what you want.
Lips only: Bring your favourite lipstick or gloss with you. If you have a history of cold sores, it is possible that the simulation of the treatment will activate the herpes virus. It is therefore essential that you consult with a pharmacist and request preventative medication AT LEAST 1 week prior to your appointment. If you have an active cold sore, ensure that you notify the clinic as soon as possible to reschedule your appointment.

After-care: Lips & Brows

Please note: Following after-care advice is extremely important. Not doing so has the potential to greatly impact your treatment or even damage your skin. It is your responsibility to read over this section carefully, and contact the clinic if you have any questions or concerns.

Avoid for 2 weeks:

Touching or picking the area, sweating (no cardio, gym, sauna’s or spa’s), spray tanning, makeup, soap, cleansers, water, facial treatments, sleeping on your face, high UV exposure, sun beds or infrared light exposure.
Brows only: No tinting for 4 weeks, no waxing for 2 weeks.
Lips only: No kissing, alcohol or hot drinks for 5-7 days, and drink all liquids through a straw.

Do for 2 weeks:

Clean the area morning & night with a damp cotton round; dab dry and then apply a very thin film of Stratamed with a cotton round (no fingers!). Stratamed should dry clear within 5 minutes. Once dry, gently remove excess around the area if necessary.
Lips only: Also apply bepanthen whenever needed throughout the day to keep the area hydrated, as lips will feel dry throughout the healing process. If the lips are too dry this may potentially lift pigment away sooner than desired.

After-care: Li-FT Saline Tattoo Removal

Please note: It is critical to follow all aftercare instructions to prevent complications, scarring and to achieve optimum removal results. Read the following carefully.

For 2 weeks or until scabs have fallen off (naturally, do not pick/touch!):

  • Clean the area morning & night with sterilised saline, using a cotton round or cotton tip.
  • Be very gentle when wiping or dabbing clean, any pressure will interrupt the process of osmosis, and therefore stop the process of the pigment being drawn towards the surface.
  • The area will start to form a scab around days 3-5.
  • Do nothing else, the area needs to be kept clean, dry & open to the air!
  • Continue the cleaning process for more than 2 weeks if there is still any scabbing.

ONLY once all scabs have fallen off:

  • Gently apply 1-2 drops 100% VIT E oil to the area twice daily, and throughout the day if possible.
  • Continue this for a minimum of 4 weeks to nourish the skin.
  • DO NOT start applying VIT E oil until all scabs have naturally & completely fallen off.
  • Once you have entered this phase you may go back to your normal routine other than applying the VIT E oil.

Important during the removal healing process:

  • NO: Bathing, swimming, saunas, tanning, makeup, or exercise until ALL scabbing is gone.
  • DO NOT disrupt the scabbing process (no picking, scratching, touching etc). All scabbing needs to fall off naturally. If you force or pick a scab off you will disrupt the process of osmosis and potentially cause scarring. It is critical to keep the scabs on as long as possible to achieve optimum results.
  • If you have any questions or concerns please contact the clinic. If at any time there are signs of infection, inform the clinic & contact your doctor immediately.
  • LIP TATTOO REMOVAL ONLY: Drink liquids with a straw until all scabbing has naturally fallen off. Brush with natural toothpaste (no whitening or peroxide toothpastes). Cut food into small bits. Try to keep mouth expressions to a minimum until all scabbing is gone.

  • It is important to the removal process and the integrity of the skin that 8 full weeks take place before another lightening session can be done. NO EXCEPTIONS.
  • Lightening and/or removing unwanted pigment is a long process and patience is required. This is true whether you are choosing a lightening product, saline removal service, or laser removal. Please be patient and give the process a fair chance to work. The number of sessions required will depend on how saturated the pigment is, how deep it was implanted, whether there is any scar tissue present, what ink was used, how much of the area needs to be removed, the health of your skin, your immune system, your lifestyle, and more.
  • In many cases only a percentage of the pigment needs to be lightened/removed and then we can continue the correction process by colour correcting or colour shifting with new pigment. In cases where the old shape is incorrect, colour correcting will not be an option, and removing as much of the pigment as possible will be necessary.
  • Results cannot be foreseen, predicted or guaranteed due to the nature of tattoo removal and the variables between cases.
  • There is always a risk of hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation. This can happen during the removal process, or it can be caused by the tattooing process and revealed by the removal process. In most cases this will go away over time, and is largely dependent on the health of your skin, the existing tattoo to be removed, and how carefully you adhere to the removal aftercare instructions.

How long does cosmetic tattooing last?

Results last on average 1-2 years+ depending on skin type, age, lifestyle, health, medications & other factors. Everyone is different, but It is recommended to come back for a colour boost session at least every 2 years.

Does it hurt?

Anaesthetic is optional, but highly recommended. We use prescription grade numbing products, specifically prepared for each client by our trusted compounding pharmacy. This costs $20 + shipping, and is definitely worthwhile. It makes the tattooing process nearly completely painless, in fact many of our clients often relax and fall asleep.

How long does the treatment take?

The first session takes 4 hours and the touch up takes 2 hours. Consultations are a 1 hour appointment.

When is my follow up appointment?

Your complimentary touch up will be 4-8 weeks following initial treatment appointment. We always start conservatively for the first session, therefore the follow up appointment is necessary to achieve optimum results.

What to expect at your appointment?

Your complimentary touch up will be 4-8 weeks following initial treatment appointment. We always start conservatively for the first session, therefore the follow up appointment is necessary to achieve optimum results.

What colour will my tattoo be?

Tawny will custom blend a pigment for you on the day, taking into consideration your goals as well as your skin undertones, overtones and natural hair colour. Certain medical or skin conditions may also affect the colour she chooses for you. Keep in mind that the colour on the day will often look too “warm,” as it will soften, ash and change significantly over the healing process. Tawnys uses the most high quality and up-to-date pigments available on the market today, to ensure that your tattoo remains a stable & natural colour as it fades.

What is the healing process like?

This process takes 2 weeks on average for brows, and 1 week on average for lips. On the day of treatment you will be in love with your new cosmetic tattoo – although it will look a little too bold until healed! At the halfway point your cosmetic tattoo will start to peel. It may also feel slightly itchy during this phase, but it’s very important to leave the area alone! Once the old layer has shed, you may feel the colour is dull & faded, don’t panic! The new skin is very collagen rich and creates a temporary veil over the pigment. Over the next week or so you will see the colour come back through! You will return for your touch up session 4-8 weeks later.

Is it safe?

Cosmetic tattooing is completely safe when performed by a trained, experienced & licensed professional who is qualified in infection control. Tawny offers the safest & most up-to-date techniques available on the market today. The integrity of your skin is of utmost importance. There are always risks associated with treatments that involve skin penetration, however if advised aftercare is correctly followed, these risks are minimal.

How do you make sure the result is symmetrical?

Tawny uses advanced face mapping techniques to find the perfect brow shape for each client, based upon your bone structure and facial shape. She takes anywhere from 20-40 minutes pre-drawing with a pencil until the shape is 100% perfect. She will shape your brows sitting up, because gravity as well as facial muscles have a significant effect on facial symmetry. Tawny will make sure you are completely satisfied with your new brow shape before beginning treatment, she does not believe in rushing such an important step.

Should I get a patch test?

Patch tests are optional. We recommend a patch test if you have had sensitivities in the past to: numbing products, latex, pigments, glycerin, witch hazel, isopropyl alcohol, aqua, rosin, or DMDM hydantoin (a preservative), or if you have very sensitive skin in general. Allergic reactions are very rare, but can happen. If you would like a patch test, please let the clinic know as this needs to be done prior to treatment (during a scheduled consultation).

How do I look after my cosmetic tattoo long term?

Active ingredients and certain chemicals in your cosmetics & skincare will accelerate fading. Avoid the area. What are active ingredients? AHA’s (glycolic & lactic acid), BHA’s (salicylic acid), benzoyl peroxide, bleaching agents (hydroquinone), vitamin A (retinol) & vitamin C (ascorbic acid).
As a general rule, keep most anti-aging products away from your cosmetic tattoo (surrounding areas are fine).
Microneedling, dermabrasion, chemical peels and other skin treatments that encourage cell turnover will contribute to fading. Ask your dermatologist or skin therapist to avoid your cosmetic tattoo.
DO NOT get IPL or laser resurfacing treatments near your cosmetic tattoo. The laser has the potential to cause fading, lightening, darkening or discoloration of the area. Please inform any technicians of your cosmetic tattoo.

To Do:

Wear SPF when in the sun, excessive UV exposure over time will cause your cosmetic tattoo to fade faster.
Do ensure to take care of your skin health in general. Your cosmetic tattoo sits just under the surface, so if you have damaged skin sitting on top it can affect the way your cosmetic tattoo looks. Gentle exfoliation every week will prevent dead skin cells from building up over your cosmetic tattoo.
Once healed, minor patchiness is normal. Many clients also prefer to go bolder after the first session, as we always start off conservatively. Do book in for your complimentary 4-8 week perfecting session to make any necessary adjustments and to get the most out of your treatment.
Do book in for a colour boost in 1-2 years time to keep your cosmetic tattooing topped up (varies based upon age, lifestyle, skin type, health, medications and more).
